Travel writing![]() |
Here is the Rose, her tall masts looming toward the stars, the familiar tangle of ropes and rigging silhouetted in the night; and it's like seeing an old friend who was once on the road to ruin, redeemed and living a new life. |

"Flying dreams," Odyssey, the magazine of the Chevron Travel Club. Travel story about aviation museums.
With its delicate structure of varnished wood and wings covered in pure white muslin, the hand-built replica of the Wright Flyer suspended from the rafters of a Florida hangar is a work of art. It can also kill you... |

I love travel and adventure, and since I have two degrees in geography it seems it would make sense for me to do lots more travel writing. I'm working now to find opportunities to do that. Since my trip to Costa Rica a couple of years ago, I've been working on a story called "The turtles of Tortuguero." Check back here soon for more info. |

This is a tiny little story, just a few paragraphs, but for the sake of comprehensiveness I'll list it here: "Well worth the drive: Experimental balloon rally in Post Mills, Vt.," Yankee magazine, May 2001.
Post Mills Airport -- with its wide grass runway, a quirky museum, and Rube Goldberg-like flying machines -- invites you to revisit your childhood's wildest dreams. |

Arizona's Superstition Wilderness. Coming soon: A slideshow of my travel photography.
A brief review of where I've been -- mainly for the sake of editors who may be in search of a writer familiar with a particular place.
North America: I've driven all across Canada, venturing above the 60th parallel into the Northwest Territories. In the U.S., I've lived in Rhode Island, North Carolina, south Florida, Hawaii, the San Francisco Bay Area, Colorado, and Washington D.C. I've often visited Arizona, where my sister lives, and Vermont, where my brother and his wife raise Morgan horses. I've been to most of the states in one way or another, driving or flying, working or exploring. I drove from Phoenix to Mexico's Puerto Penasco, on the Sea of Cortez. I sailed aboard the brigantine Black Pearl in a tall-ships race from Newport to Block Island and south to Norfolk, Virginia, and back. I've sailed many times aboard the Tall Ship Rose (see photo below) in New England seas, and once joined the ship in Antigua for a week of Caribbean sailing.
Europe: During my senior year in college, I lived for a month in Ireland on a winter-break study-abroad program. After graduation, I backpacked for three months through England, France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, and explored Scandanavia, reaching North Cape, the northernmost point in Europe. I met up with friends at hot-air balloon rallies in Leeds, England, and in the Netherlands, and attended an airshow in Switzerland.
Central America: In 2000, I traveled to Costa Rica with a group of environmental educators to study tropical ecosystems, visiting an active volcano, the mountain forest of Monteverde, and the turtle refuge at Tortuguero.
