    Aviation journalism

    As senior news editor for AVweb, the Internet's aviation magazine and news service, I write news stories for a twice-weekly news digest, cover aviation events, write feature stories, and take photos. I was AVweb's acting executive editor from December 2001 to October 2002. I also contribute to Robb Report magazine on aviation topics.

    Nature & environment

    February 2003, in progress:
    Woonasquatucket Greenway, for Providence Monthly (March). Deep winter affects Bay habitats, for the Providence Phoenix. "A Year in the Life of Narragansett Bay," independent project; a series of stories that will follow the Bay's seasonal cycles, incorporating science, natural history, and cultural aspects of human interaction with the Bay and its watershed.     Senior news editor AVweb aviation magazine, March 1999-present: Writer for midweek news updates for Web site, plus varied assignments including features, deadline news, photos, and special-events coverage. News director for EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, July 2001. Acting executive editor, December 2001-October 2002.

    Copy editor/Section editor The Providence Journal, 1993-1999: Responsible for editing and production of news sections for a daily metropolitan newspaper.

    Geography instructor Rhode Island College, 1990-present: Part-time faculty, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in geography and environmental studies. Also taught teacher workshops for the Rhode Island Geography Education Alliance, and took two groups to sea for week-long marine geography workshops aboard the square-rigged Tall Ship Rose.

    Science editor Rhode Island Sea Grant College Program, 1990-1991: Edited and produced academic and outreach publications on marine topics.

    Book editor The National Geographic Society, Washington, D.C., January 1988 - August 1989: Responsible for research, rewrite, map compilation and map production. Worked on Guide to the National Parks (one year) and Inventors and Discoverers (six-month internship) in the Book Division.
